Groundbreaking Ceremony for Weeneebayko Area Health Authority’s New Health Campus & Ambulatory Centre
Release Date 2023-02-16The ZW team had the privilege of participating in the Oshki Kiskinowacihtawin/New Beginnings ceremony to celebrate new state-of-the-art Regional Health Campus in Moosonee and the new Ambulatory Care Centre in Moose Factory Island. During the ceremony, the community elders shared the history of the indigenous peoples of the James Bay Region and how the current Weeneebayko General Hospital came to be.
This project is truly a historic milestone for the James Bay Region. The current Weeneebayko General Hospital was first built in 1950 as a tuberculosis hospital and has served northern communities for over 70 years. The redevelopment is necessary as WGH has limited resources, and often patients with medical emergencies need to be air-lifted to Timmins and District Hospital or Kingston General Hospital.
The new facilities will include an acute care hospital, an extended mental health and addictions centre, a long-term care elders lodge, a large hostel to support incoming patients and families, as well as new staff housing units.
The ZW team is honoured and humbled to be part of such a meaningful project, and look forward to our continuing partnership with WAHA.
